Every once in a while, it is good to remind our readers that we also work as exclusive buyer’s agents. Time is too limited for us to work in a non-exclusive relationship (though we can limit our exclusivity to certain towns, leaving buyers free to work with other agents in other areas). Often, we are able to work with buyers on houses that are not on the market or listed in MLS.

If you would like to talk about working with us, Contact us for an appointment as buyer agents. We are glad to set you up with free, no-obligation, custom MLS searches that will email you every day with the listings you want to see, and your own custom search page will be updated in real time as listings come on and go off the market.

Here is a selective round-up of some sample available (as of this posting) modern homes in the area. These are other brokers’ listings.

Noted Modernist, Paul Rudolph, founder of the Sarasota School, studied, lived, and worked in the Boston area early in his career. Hammond Real Estate in Cambridge has the listing of a home he built on Avon Hill, converted from a big shared garage. The house has an International Style/urban loft feel. It needs a bit of updating, but with a secluded siting and private garden, it is truly one of a kind. The above photo is an archival shot from Architectural Record. Offered at $2 million.

Hollywood in Gloucester? Well, the famously reclusive Greta Garbo once owned this waterfront estate as her summertime getaway. As the Gibson Sotheby’s listing brokers write,  “‘Le Beauport’ a Modernist masterpiece commanding sweeping views of the open ocean and the entrance to Gloucester’s legendary harbor. The seven bedroom, seven bath Bauhaus-style waterfront estate built for Richard Hammond was designed by the renowned architectural firm of Wyeth & King….”

Not sure if we would characterize it as “Bauhaus style” (many would argue there is no such thing), but it does have a whiff of Art Deco to it. 23 total rooms, over 6000 s.f. of living area, on over nine acres. Offered at $2,895,000.

Perched atop a hill on Baldpate Hill Road in Newton, this Henry Hoover-designed Mid-Century-Modern home offers tree-top views from a convenient location off of Route 9, in a neighborhood of very grand homes, many of which standing where more modest homes used to be sited.  This one has a bit of a Marin County feel. The current owner has made some updates, though new owners might to continue the process. This four-bed, two-and-a-half-bath house is offered at $1,299,000  You can read a bit about Hoover, an early Lincoln-based Modernist (his work in the town pre-dates the arrival in Lincoln of Bauhaus co-founder, Walter Gropius), here at the Friends of Modern Architecture, Lincoln site.

This is just a small sampling of current area listings. Though inventory is generally low for a spring market, there is quite a few mid-century-modern houses priced below $1 million, especially as one travels further away from Boston and Cambridge.
